Decerto (Contend. Fight to the finish.)

“Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere. Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace. [Isa. 52:7.] Lift up over all the [covering] shield of saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).” ~Ephesians 6:14-18 (Amp)

I’ve found myself at a place in life where I’m wrestling (contending) for “the Faith”, much like Jacob wrestled with the angel. What I’m about to write is probably the most transparent view of the struggle within me that I have ever written, let alone attempted to confront. But, I’ve found the best way to “contend” with something is to first materialize it in writing. Jesus demonstrated this point by becoming “the Word” incarnate (in flesh and blood). It is by this very Word that all principalities and dark powers are destroyed in Revelation.

“After that I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse [appeared]! The One Who was riding it is called Faithful (Trustworthy, Loyal, Incorruptible, Steady) and True, and He passes judgment and wages war in righteousness (holiness, justice, and uprightness). [Ezek. 1:1.]
His eyes [blaze] like a flame of fire, and on His head are many kingly crowns (diadems); and He has a title (name) inscribed which He alone knows or can understand. [Dan. 10:6.]
He is dressed in a robe dyed by dipping in blood, and the title by which He is called is The Word of God.
And the troops of heaven, clothed in fine linen, dazzling and clean, followed Him on white horses.
From His mouth goes forth a sharp sword with which He can smite (afflict, strike) the nations; and He will shepherd and control them with a staff (scepter, rod) of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath and indignation of God the All-Ruler (the Almighty, the Omnipotent). [Ps. 2:9.] ” ~ Revelation 19:11-15 (AMP)

With that said, I have several obstacles in my life that, to this point, I have not been able to get around. I know I will not be able to move forward until these “contentions” are resolved. They are listed chronologically…

#1 Kurt Hocke

Sometime after college (circa 1992), I hit a fork in the road. I was seriously considering going out west to minister on a Navajo reservation when someone called me with a proposition. That “someone” was Kurt Hocke. He was forming a band for the exclusive short-term goal of competing in a “battle of the bands” concert and he wanted me to be the drummer. I had no idea at that point the apostolic role this man would play in my life. Needless to say, I went with the band option. The band turned into a tightly knit tapestry of friendship that it seems only happens in bands. When musicians work together musically there is a certain “synergy” that happens where the sum of the parts does not equal the whole. That is the closest analogy I’ve found for unity in the Spirit.  Well, the battle of the bands ended up getting rained out, but the band played on! We went on to call ourselves “The Ballistics”. Our sound could be considered alternative rock at the time. We covered bands like U2, the Alarm, the 77’s, LSU, etc. Our mission was to bring the Light into the bars and clubs and dark places (much like Jesus did).  A Bible study group came out of those band days that laid the foundation of who I am today. My previous theology was tried and tested in those years and out of that furnace was forged a much stronger faith. Kurt had a blunt way of challenging doubts and arguments and blowing them out of the water! Kurt and his wife Debbie became a model of a godly relationship and things were great. Life was good. Kurt and Debbie also became Kelly and my pre-marriage counselors. We would do many things together; hiking, canoeing, camping, picnics, parties. One of Kurt’s favorite scriptures was: “You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.  Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked.  Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place, [Ps. 91:1, 14.] There shall no evil befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent.  For He will give His angels [especial] charge over you to accompany and defend and preserve you in all your ways [of obedience and service].  They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. [Luke 4:10, 11; Heb. 1:14.] “.

Kurt and Deb were instrumental in organizing my surprise 30th Birthday party. They had all my friends contribute to purchase my hand-crafted in the Ivory coast of Africa djembe that has been in constant use ever since.

Kurt died suddenly while he was at work. My foundation was rocked. Like the numbing silence after an earthquake we were left standing dazed and confused.

Light, Sound and the nature of God

I recently finished the book called “the Shack” and it really stirred up some old questions about the nature of God. The mysteries of Grace, evil, pre-destination, eternity and the like still remain mysterious. But, somehow it’s OK now. I have learned to love the hide-and-seek aspect of God. I found that you either learn to love it or become bitter and dark inside.

” It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a thing.” -Proverbs 25:2 (AMP)

You can probably see from some of the other posts that I am fascinated by the nature of light and sound. Among other aspects of creation, the more you study it the deeper the revelation.

“For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them.  For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification],  Because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened. “ – Romans 1:19-21 (AMP)

It is already VERY clear from scripture that God and light share the same nature. Only, the light of God is so much more complete (intensity, purity and bandwidth) then anything we have ever experienced physically. God is also triune in nature (3 in one) but there is also talk in Revelation of the 7 spirits of God. Did you ever sit down and try to wrap your head around that?

Let’s discuss the Trinity first…

How can there be three separate persona’s yet One God???????  White light can be broken down or separated into 3 components: red, green and blue. They are three very distinct colors, each with their own characteristics, yet when they are combined they are white light. Each pixel of your computer monitor is divided into 3 little lights. You will never be able to display the full gamut of colors if any one of the RGB trinity is not present. In music, there is something very mysterious that happens when you play a first, third and fifth interval simultaneously. You get a triad chord! That chord has a sound all it’s own. It also has a sound that would not exist if any note of the triad was missing. So, there it is folks, tangible evidence of the supernatural in physical creation.

Now let’s look at the seven Spirits of God…

When you send white light through a prism you get more than just red, green and blue. You get the complete spectrum! ROYGBIV and every color in between. But there are 7 discernable colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet).  In those seven colors there are 3 primaries and 4 secondary colors. So 4 of the 7 distinct colors depend on 3 of them to exist! Doesn’t that just blow your mind! Hang on it gets better.

When we look at a star in the night sky we perceive it as a white light. When a scientist breaks the light coming from a star into it’s spectrum we see black bars at certain wavelengths. Each star has it’s own “fingerprint” by the levels of each wavelength of light it emits. Likewise, everything that we see with our physical eyes we see because it is illuminated. If it is not illuminated we don’t see it. If the object doesn’t reflect any light, we perceive it as black. If an object reflects all wavelengths of light equally, we perceive it as white. So each one of us has our own unique composition of the pure light. What we have accepted as white here in this fallen world pales (pun intended) in comparison to real white. It’s analagous to God moving through a prism at the moment of creation. That One pure complete light divides to three, then seven, then every imaginable infinate combination of color as the light source spreads out! each of us is a light fragment that could never exist without the three primaries of white light.

Musically, there are 7 distinct pitches that repeat themselves up the octaves. The distinct notes are A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Add the sharps and you get a total of 12 pitches. Twelve is another very significant number that I won’t go into now. Of course there are an infinate number of tones between them, but they are the distinctions we recognize. Could anyone look at this data and still believe all that exists is by chance?

None of us are really content being fragmented. It’s very frustrating!

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy], yet so that men cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11 (AMP)

The glorious part is that just as Adam was the prism that split us all to fragments, Jesus is the prism that’s re-focusing all the fragments back to pure white light!

“Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit [restoring the dead to life].” -1Corinthians 15:45

So, since the first Adam the beam of light has been diverging farther and farther into “individual” fragments. We do like to celebrate our individuality, don’t we? We rejoice in what we can achieve, build, create and destroy. The unity of the Spirit is becoming more of a foreign concept as “each of us does what is right in our own eyes”.  But, there’s no need to dwell on what is painfully obvious. Let’s turn to the gloriously miraculous… the last Adam.. Jesus Christ. He is the prism that is presently reconciling all things back to Himself. All the diverging that has occurred throughout the centuries has turned into convergence at the cross.
